Hearth’s Back-to-School Confidence & Family Readiness Survey

Hearth’s Back-to-School Confidence & Family Readiness Survey

Picture this: It's 7:47 AM, school starts at 8:15, and you're still hunting for matching shoes while mentally calculating if there's time for breakfast. Sound familiar?

You're definitely not alone. When we surveyed 544 families in our Hearth community through our Back-to-School Confidence & Family Readiness Survey, one thing became crystal clear: we're all facing similar challenges, but some families have cracked the code on making it work.

From parents who plan weeks ahead to the brave souls adjusting routines the night before, these survey insights revealed surprising truths about what actually helps families thrive during this hectic (and memorable) season.

The bottom line? Organization isn't just about having your act together — it's about giving your whole family the confidence to tackle whatever the school year throws your way.

These numbers tell stories

Families are leaning into organization — and it's working. When we asked which Hearth features families plan to rely on most during the back-to-school transition, Routines topped the list, followed closely by the Hearth Calendar. Interestingly, Today's Feelings ranked last — though this feature might be exactly what families need most. More on that in a moment.

The confidence boost is real: 79% of parents said Hearth makes them feel more confident heading into the school year, with 28% strongly agreeing. Even better? 66% said Hearth helps their children feel more confident too.

But here's where it gets interesting. While most families are planners (42% start adjusting routines 1-2 weeks before school), a brave 7% wait until the night before to switch gears. (We're crossing our fingers for you, night-before adjusters — you've got this!)

The real challenges families face

The survey revealed what's keeping parents up at night:
-31% struggle most with juggling after-school activities
-25% find adjusting to new bedtimes the biggest challenge
-20% are stressed about packing lunches and meal planning
-20% worry about staying on top of schoolwork

And when it comes to daily chaos? 64% of families identified mornings as their most chaotic time — that frantic rush of getting everyone dressed, fed, and out the door on time.

The biggest concern overall? Managing the family schedule (56%), followed by maintaining work-life balance (36%).

What families are saying

Our community didn't hold back when sharing how their using Hearth this back-to-school season:

"Motivating everyone to do their part and know what is expected" sums up the daily challenge many parents face.

One professional organizer and designer shared: "This is right by my front door above our console table. It is what makes our house run! I always have [my kid’s] individual routines ready for them so they know exactly what to do each morning... And I don't even input it myself! I just send the monthly lunch order page to Hearth Helper and it's automatically put in for each individual child."

A homeschooling parent emphasized the power of accountability: "Being able to check off each task (chore, school, etc), will help the day to flow more smoothly and foster accountability in my children!"

And perhaps our favorite insight: "Leaning on the Hearth routines really helps move the focus of bedtime struggles from parents leading to the kids managing what are the next steps."

Why organization makes all the difference (and why kids should take part)

Here's a stat that might surprise you: 98% of families agree that their household runs smoother when everyone knows what to expect each day (63% strongly agree). The survey results reinforce what we've long believed: when families have systems that work, everything else falls into place.

Even better? 73% of families involve their children in household management and organization always or often. As one parent put it: "Having everything they have to do in the morning before school set up as their daily routine takes the guess work out for me AND them. It makes it a cakewalk."

But here's what families might be missing: While Routines and Calendar topped the feature rankings, Today's Feelings came in last. Yet with 39% of children feeling anxious about school starting (alongside 53% who are excited), emotional regulation tools might be exactly what families need most. Understanding and acknowledging how everyone feels each day can transform family dynamics and reduce that morning chaos.

84.5% of families said having Hearth Display makes them feel more prepared for back-to-school. It's not just about having a system — it's about having a system that includes everyone and acknowledges both the practical and emotional sides of family life.
