As a working mom of two, with a nine-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, keeping up with the soccer practices, playdates, work events, and school drop-offs, and more was getting tricky. And, most of the logistics of it all lived in one place: my brain. Eventually, our family hit a point when we realized we desperately needed a better way to organize our lives, and I shouldn’t be the only one carrying the load. We got our Hearth a little over seven months ago, and it’s changed the way we keep organized and communicate as a family.
It’s Transformed Our Family’s Scheduling
When my daughter turned eight, it seemed like overnight her schedule picked up big time. All of the sudden there were more after-school commitments, practices, school projects—her calendar was jam-packed. Factor in a toddler with two working parents juggling our own schedules and things got frantic, fast.
One of the things that made Hearth a game-changer for us, is how it’s so easy to sync calendars and see what everyone has coming up at a glance. I can easily see what my husband has coming up for work, what I have going on, and my daughter’s schedule, too. We use it to place everything from her soccer calendar, evening events, and doctor’s appointments. A common phrase in our house these days when someone asks what’s on deck for the day? “Go check the Hearth!”
The Routines Feature Helps Set Expectations
As my daughter’s schedule is busier and she begins to take on more responsibly in the house, we needed a way to hold her accountable for the daily tasks she needs to do in the morning and the evening. Before Hearth, when she came home from school, her backpack would be tossed to the side, lunch pail still in there, and there wasn’t much structure.
Since creating after-school steps as part of her evening routine, she now knows that when she gets home she has to empty her backpack, get a snack, work on homework, and pick up her room. Her morning and evening routines have also been customized to what we want to have her help with. For example, on top of things like getting in PJs and brushing teeth, she also feeds our dog in the morning and evening and wipes down the tables after dinner. It’s really helped everyone stay in the loop and on top of what she should be doing each day and teaches her the importance of contributing to the household.
We Love Adding In Fun Family Moments
Scheduling, to-dos, and all the life things can sometimes take away time from the fun stuff. We love coming up with one to two fun activities we want to do as a family and adding that into the Hearth. Since we’re in the throes of the holiday season, this week we have “go to the Christmas tree lighting” as an event. Adding these to the calendar helps keep us all committed to getting out of the house and spending time.
